Who We Are

Our Mission Statement

Prisoner Visitation and Support (PVS) is a nationwide network of volunteer visitors to prisoners in Federal and Military prisons throughout the United States. Our priority is to visit those prisoners who:

  • do not ordinarily receive visits from family and friends

  • want or need visits

  • are serving long sentences

  • are in solitary confinement, or

  • are on death row.

Our purpose is to provide prisoners with regular face-to-face contact from the world outside of prison to help them cope with prison life and prepare for a successful re-entry into society.

Our Guiding Principles
  1. All persons deserve respect as human beings.

  2. Listening is the primary purpose of a PVS visitor’s presence to prisoners.

  3. Visitors are objective and respectful to both prisoners and prison staff.

  4. PVS concentrates on visiting persons who want supportive contact from persons outside of the prison system.

  5. Visiting is focused on the needs of the prisoner.

  6. Visitors maintain confidentiality regarding visits within the guidelines of PVS when reporting to the PVS National Office.

  7. Friendship is extended within the limitations and restrictions of PVS, the Federal Bureau of Prison (BOP), and the Department of Defense (DOD) policies and rules.

  8. PVS, an organization recognized by the BOP and the DOD, regards visiting as a privilege that must be preserved by all involved.

  9. Security of all involved in prison visitation is a primary concern.

  10. Training as an effective visitor is a necessary and continuous process.
